Use Thoughtful Experimentation to Validate New Ideas

Insurgent Tip by COMMON

As entrepreneurs, we’re big dreamers and big doers. Those are wonderful traits overall – and they’re what allow us to identify and seize the kind of opportunities that most people miss. However, it is also dangerously easy for entrepreneurs to become seduced by the power of their own dreams. New ideas tend to really stoke the fire for us, so when a new product or offering is on the table, our first instinct is often to jump in with both feet.

But even the best ideas require testing and validation. Experimentation should be a key component of any new launch process, regardless of industry, goal, or even budget. The purpose of your experimentation should be to validate — or invalidate — the assumptions driving whatever you’re launching, be that product/offering, a new customer base, or a whole new biz.

Ideally, you experiment and validate at every stage of a new launch. Experiments can vary wildly depending on what exactly you want to validate. But whatever tests you’re running, there are a few key rules you should keep in mind.

This Insurgent Tip is for the entrepreneur looking to dream big while reducing risk.
