Commerce isn’t Capitalism

Insurgent Tip by COMMON

When we talk to people about addressing the damage caused by capitalism, we usually get one of two reactions: either people are totally on board, or they’re instantly suspicious.

We don’t blame folks who respond with skepticism instead of enthusiasm. Many Americans in particular automatically jump to the worst failures of communism, like the famine that swept through the USSR in the 1930s, whenever any critique of capitalism is raised.

Our culture has indoctrinated us with the belief there are the only two options: capitalist prosperity or communist deprivation.

But that’s a false dichotomy, and one that is predicated on a flawed understanding of both capitalism and the history of economic models overall (i.e. the idea that capitalist economies work, and other types of economies don’t).

If we want to be able to imagine — and then build — a future of flourishing for all, we need to start mentally disentangling these knots.

This Insurgent Tip is for those entrepreneurs doing the mental work to imagine new futures.
